Carotid Duplex (DUPLEX)
About the Tests
Carotid duplex ultrasonography is a non-invasive and painless technique used to rule out carotid artery occlusion or narrowing. Carotid arteries are major arteries on the left and right side of your neck that supply blood to your brain and eyes. Occlusion of these arteries can cause a major stroke or other neurological symptoms.
The sonographer will apply some gel on your neck and will check both the left and right side carotid arteries. The vertebral arteries will also be checked. The procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes. During the study, please try not to talk or move to minimize distortion of the images.
There is no special preparation for this exam.
The results should be available to your physician within 7 days from the date of the test.
